Forget the brushes.
Brushless technology offers the advantages of longer alternator life and higher output voltage.
Most vehicles and light trucks still use conventional alternators with brushes. This technology may continue to be used, but there is a better solution, especially for heavier-duty vehicles. Brushless alternators have been manufactured for more than a decade, yet this type of alternator still appears not to be widely used in vehicle manufacturing. Given the advantages of brushless alternators, the time to say “Goodbye” to alternators with brushes may come very soon. But let us briefly look at the advantages of brushless alternators.
Wear takes longer
This technology offers several advantages over the older approach. Any driver with at least two or three years of experience has either encountered or knows that conventional alternators eventually wear out. If the alternator is not working properly, the battery will not charge, and the vehicle may literally stop while on the motorway. No one would want to find themselves in such a situation. One of the main causes of alternator wear is brush wear resulting from intensive use. This problem does not exist with brushless alternators – no brushes, no problem.
Brushless alternators undoubtedly have one major advantage over the more conventional type. They have a much longer service life than conventional alternators. The absence of slip-ring bearings reduces the number of parts subject to wear. Brushless models usually come with an extended warranty – from 100 000 km to over 300 000 km.
Another significant advantage of brushless alternators is their high output. While an average car requires 50-70 A of current, the requirements of heavy trucks or buses are much greater. Brushless alternators successfully meet this challenge, while older alternators have their limitations.
A brushless alternator essentially consists of two generators built on a common shaft. It has a total of 13 fewer parts subject to wear, making maintenance easier and less expensive. In addition to being more durable, these alternators also weigh less.
Is this the type of alternator intended for trucks?
We can indeed draw this conclusion from the information above. Brushless alternators perform better, last longer and cause fewer problems in trucks travelling on motorways, as well as in earthmoving machinery, intercity buses and similar applications. Although the technology is used mainly in the automotive industry, it can also be applied in other areas of manufacturing.
Brushless alternators can be used successfully in various industries related to mechanical engineering. The technology is also used in wind turbine generators. Given the development of technology, it is not difficult to conclude that brushless alternators will find increasing use in various areas of professional activity and everyday life in the future
